Conjunctivitis is an eye condition that can be caused by infection or allergens. Although it is self-limiting, the symptoms can be irritating and may need to be relieved with treatment. This Blog discusses symptoms to look out for and how to treat conjunctivitis.
Types of conjunctivitis.
To understand how to treat conjunctivitis it is important to understand what type of conjunctivitis you may have. There are three main types of conjunctivitis: bacterial, viral, and allergic. All three types can arise through touching the eyes and face. Bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are highly contagious. The diagram illustrates the similarities and differences in the symptoms. Treatment Options
Symptoms are self-limiting and can usually resolve on their own within a week (for bacterial conjunctivitis) or two (for viral conjunctivitis). The first line treatment for conjunctivitis is eye hygiene – bathing the eyes (the next section goes into further details) and reducing the spread of infection by washing hands regularly and avoid sharing towels/face cloths. There is no treatment for viral conjunctivitis other than bathing the eyes and to prevent the spreading of the infection. Antihistamine eye drops (e.g. sodium cromoglycate) can be used to relieve the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. Antibacterial eye drops/ointments such as chloramphenicol are only suitable for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. Each treatment should be used as directed by your pharmacist to ensure they effectively clear the symptoms.
How to bathe the eyes.
- Boil some water.
- Let the water cool to room temperature.
- Using a cotton pad wipe from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner.
Tip: Use a new cotton pad with each wipe.
